Type-bar actions using auxiliary power; keys operating electric contacts.-A typewriter in which two or more type actions 2, Fig. 2, are selected for individual operation by a selection magnet 9 to couple the selected type action 2 to a common snatch roll 1 is characterized by the provision of a laterally displaceable guide rail 16 whereby the push-rod 6 of armature 7 may be displaced concomitantly to face opposite a type action 2, Fig. 3, corresponding to the depression of a key 15l. . . 15r. In operation, depression of the key 15l closes electric contacts 14 to actuate the selection magnet 9 whose armature 7 displaces the push-rod 6 to bring a hook 2<SP>1</SP> of the type action into engagement with a tooth 1<SP>1</SP> of the snatch roll 1. The snatch roll pulls the type action 2 in a downward direction to pivot a lever 3, which through a link 4 displaces a typebar 5 for impression. Power assisted combination type-setting mechanisms.-In one embodiment, in Figs. 2 and 3, each selection magnet 9 is associated with two type actions 2, the push-bar 6 being disposed centrally in its inoperated position. On depression of a key, e.g. 15r, an electromagnet 17r is energized and attracts the guide rail 16 to displace the push-bar to the right. Depression of the key 15l actuates an electromagnet 17l to displace the push-bar 6 to the left. In another embodiment (not shown) three keys or type actions are associated with one selection magnet 9 and the central type action is operated directly by the magnet 9. In a further embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown), four type actions are associated with the selection magnet 9 and two guide rails 16, one for horizontal and one for vertical displacement of the push-bar 6 are provided and each associated with a pair of magnets such as 171, 17r. Selection of an appropriate type action 2 is effected by concomitant displacement of the guide rails in a horizontal and vertical direction to displace the push-bar 6, e.g. in a top-left or bottom-right direction. Machines coupled for simultaneous operation.- The typewriter is provided with keys which can close contacts to operate selection magnets 9 of another typewriter or the typewriter may be controlled by the keyboard of another typewriter whose keys actuate the selection magnets 9.
