Abstract

546,909. Typewriters &c. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Feb. 1, 1941, No. 1346. Convention date, April 6, 1940. [Class 100 (iv)] A master and subordinate machines for typing simultaneously on webs are provided with platen - operated contacts for detecting the arrival of the starting lines at the printing lines, and controlling means, such as the linespacing mechanisms, for maintaining the webs in register with each other. In the apparatus shown in the Figure, the platens of the master and subordinate machines M, R are geared to cam-discs 54, 54<SP>1</SP> for opening contacts 56, 56<SP>1</SP> when the starting lines of the webs are at the printing lines. The master machine is provided with contacts 61 operated by a key 59 and arranged in circuit with a holding- contact 70a, the contacts 56, and a magnet 60 for operating the carriage-returning key of the master machine, and thereby initiating carriage-return and repeated line-spacing. The key 59 operates also contacts 63 arranged in circuit with a holding- contact 70<SP>1</SP>a, the contacts 56', and a magnet 60<SP>1</SP> for operating the carriage-return key of the subordinate machine and thereby initiating carriage-return and repeated line-spacing. If the webs run out of register, the contacts 56 are opened when the contacts 561 are closed, and on operation of the key 59, only the line-spacing mechanism of the subordinate machine is operated, the webs being thereby again brought into register. The cam 54<SP>1</SP> is arranged to close contacts 66<SP>1</SP> in the circuit of a lamp L on the master machine, illumination of the lamp indicating to the operator that the cam 54<SP>1</SP> is in starting position. The carriage-returning keys control engagement of cams with driving-rollers, the cam-detents being arranged to permit repeated operation of the cams.
