In order to avoid printing on any of the impression cylinders of a multi-colour rotary sheet printing machine consisting of a number of series arranged printing units during the starting or stopping of the machine, as the case may be, a control apparatus is used which operatively links the " on-off " control mechanism of each unit. The apparatus includes a first shaft 8, Fig. 1, arranged to be connected through an electromagnetically operated clutch 6, 6<SP>1</SP> with a main machine drive 9 in response to movement of a control lever 1 for the first unit into a print-on position, a second shaft 7 arranged to be connected through an electromagnetically operated clutch 5, 5<SP>1</SP> with the machine drive in response to movement of said control lever into a print-off position, a number of cams, such as 11, 12 and 10, 10a corresponding to the number of further printing units mounted on each shaft 8 and 7 and, for each further printing unit, a " print-on " microswitch such as 13, 14 actuable by the corresponding cam on said first shaft 8 to render the unit operative and a "print-off" microswitch 21, 21a actuable by the corresponding cam on the second shaft 7 to render the unit inoperative. The arrangement of the parts of the control apparatus is such that movement of the control lever 1 into a " print-on " position or into a "print-off" position causes the further units to be rendered operative or inoperative, as the case may be, in succession in accordance with a predetermined time interval.
