Abstract

699,420. Printing machines. ARMSTRONG, J. W. Feb. 15, 1952 [Feb. 17, 1951], No. 3906/51. Class 100(ii) In a printing machine of the kind having superposed printing, intermediate and impression cylinders, the bearings 11 of the pressure cylinder 12 are mounted in vertical slides and connected to screwed rods 13 engaged in nut members 15 which are rotated to lift or lower the impression roller. The peripheries of the nut members are formed as worm wheels 14 for co-operation with worm gears 16 on a shaft 17 extending across the machine. The shaft 17 is driven from an electric motor 23 through gearing, the last wheel 18 of which is freely mounted on the shaft 17 and is formed with a clutch part 24. Another clutch part 25, slidable but not rotatable on the shaft 17 is urged against the part 24 by a spring 26 tightened by a nut 27. When a predetermined pressure has been attained between the pressure cylinder and the intermediate cylinder 29, the clutch parts slip relatively. Upward movement of the pressure cylinder is limited by a stop-switch 28 actuated by the end of one of the rods 13 to stop the motor. Several printing units may be arranged in tandem for multi-colour printing, the bearings of the several pressure rollers being arranged for simultaneous lifting and lowering.
