Abstract

[Class 100 (ii)] To obtain correct register in rotary printing- machines means are provided to adjust circumferentially the printing or impression cylinders relatively to their shafts while the machine is at rest or in motion, and means may also be provided for similarly adjusting angularly the drive of a printing-couple relatively to another couple so as to register multi-colour or perfected impressions correctly. As shown in Fig. 5, the helical driving-gear 14 of a shaft 30 of an impression or printing cylinder is normally bolted to a disc 18 in which is mounted a worm 19 engaging a wormwheel 20 fitted with a boss screwed to the shaft 30. By loosening the bolts and operating the worm 19 the gear 14 is adjusted relatively to the shaft 30 and the nuts are then tightened after adjustment. To effect a similar adjustment while the machine is in motion a threaded sleeve 36 can be displaced laterally in a threaded bracket 38 which is prevented from rotation by a rod 39 secured to the side frames of the machine. The sleeve 36 is rotated by gearing 34, 35 operated by a shaft 33 fitted with operating handles 32, 321. The motion of the sleeve 36 is transmitted to the helical gear 29 by means of a pair of annular members 42, 44, and lateral displacement of the gear 29 causes circumferential adjustment of the shaft 6 relatively to the shaft 30. The gear 29 fits associated parts including ball bearings 45, 46 can slide on the square end of the shaft 6 on which is mounted the printing or impression cylinder. As shown in Fig. 4, similar adjustments to those described are arranged between a main drive shaft and a rotary couple 1, 2 geared together by wheels 53, 54, so that the impressions from this couple can be registered with impressions from another couple while the machine is in motion or while at rest. In Fig. 5 provision is made whereby the circumferential adjustment may effect the forme cylinder, or the impression cylinder, or both cylinders may be adjusted in opposite directions. If by means of key 56 the gear 5 is keyed to the shaft 6 of the impression cylinder 2 then the forme cylinder 1 is adjustable. If on the other hand the wheel 5 is free on its shaft and a wheel 55 in engagement therewith is keyed to the shaft 30 of the forme cylinder 1 by means of a key 57, then the impression cylinder is adjustable circumferentially. If both gears 5, 55 are keyed to their shafts, then the cylinders 1, 2 are adjusted in opposite directions by operation of either of the mechanisms described.
