Abstract

In a rotary printing machine wherein the output gear 70, Fig. 6, of the drive mechanism is connected on the drive side of the machine to the plate cylinder P, Fig. 1, by mechanism which transmits the drive to the cylinder and can be actuated to effect circumferential adjustment of the cylinder P relative to the gear 70, the adjustment mechanism is operated by a shaft 57 extending across the machine from the drive side to the other or opeerating side. Axial adjustment can also be effected through mechanism situated on the operating side. Axial adjustment; cylinder bearings.-A spigot 9 on the end of the plate cylinder P at the operating side is mounted in bearings 1 movable axially therewith, the bearings 1 being clamped by filling pieces 7 and a ring 6 against a shoulder 5 in a tubular member 4 slidable in the main frame 3. A key 11 engages a key-way 12 in the ring 6 to prevent rotary movement of the parts 4, 6. Secured by bolts 26 to the end of the spigot 9 is a member 21, 22, 23, the part 22 of which is accommodated in a thrust bearing 19 mounted in an annular member 16 so as to be axially movable with the member 16. The member 16 is threaded externally to engage a screwed bush 14 on a fixed plate 13, and has a toothed part 17 meshing with a gear 27 on a shaft 28 provided with an operating knob 31. Rotation of the knob 31 causes axial movement of the parts 16, 19, 21, 22, 23, 9, 4 and thus effects axial movement of the cylinder P. Circumferential adjustment of the cylinder P relative to its driving gear 70, Fig. 6, is effected by endwise movement of a shaft 53, Fig. 1, which extends through the parts 21, 22, 23, 9, and the cylinder P, and at its end adjacent to the drive side of the machine is attached to an arm 65, Fig. 7, rotatable thereon but movable axially therewith. At its ends the arm 65 can slide on pins 66 attached to the cylinder hub and carries cranks 75 attached to crank shafts 74 mounted in bearings 73 on the cylinder hub 68. The outer ends of the shafts 74 carry cranks 76 the ends of which are housed within a universal-joint bearing 79 rigidly secured to the rim 71 of the gear 70 which is rotatably-mounted on the hub 68. Thus endwise movement of the shaft 53 and arm 65 effects circumferential movement of the gear 70 relative to the hub 68 and therefore to the cylinder P. To move the shaft 53 endwise, it is fixed to an externallythreaded sleeve 50, Fig. 1, held against rotary movement by a key 51 and engaged by a threaded bush 41 which can be rotated by a hand-knob 58 through a shaft 56 and gearing 55, 59. The bush 41 is rotatably mounted on a -support plate 45 which moves axially with the cylinder P during axial adjustment. Indicating means.-The shafts 28, 56, Fig. 1, of the hand-knobs 31, 58 carry worms 35, 64a engaging worm-wheels on shafts extending perpendicular to the shafts 28, 56 and carrying indicating dials at their outer ends.
