Abstract
1,100,242. Printing machines. WAITE & SAVILLE Ltd. 21 June, 1965 [20 March, 1964]. No. 11814/64. Heading B6C. In a rotary or offset printing machine, particularly a multi-colour machine (a) circumferential adjustment of the plate cylinder 1 while the machine is running is effected by moving its helical gear-wheel 9 axially relative thereto, the engagement of the gear with a helical drive gear causing circumferential movement of the cylinder, (b) axial adjustment of the cylinder 1 is effected by moving its shaft 3 axially by means of an internallythreaded hand wheel 6, Fig. 1 (not shown), engaging a threaded extension of the shaft 3 and (c) adjustment of the impression pressure or tripping of the cylinder is effected by rotating eccentric bearings 4 of the shaft by a lever 17 operated by screw mechanism. The shaft 3 is capable of axial movement only and the cylinder is mounted thereon by ball-bearings 2 so as to move axially with the shaft. The gear 9 is coupled to the cylinder as described below and is mounted by ball-bearings 10 on a non- rotatable hub 11 carrying a member 15 engaged by a screw-threaded spindle 13 provided with a knob 14 rotated to effect axial movement of gear. A disc 14a on the spindle has a graduated scale to indicate the amount of angular movement of the cylinder. The hand wheel 6 and lever 7 also have means for providing a visual indication of the amount of movement. Driving gear.-The gear 9 has one or more driving members 12 each axially slidable in an aperture in the cylinder 1. Each member 12 is urged circumferentially by a spring 12 A, Fig. 2A, against the surface of the aperture thus eliminating backlash.
