This invention relates to tape dispensing and moistening machines and is a continuation in part of my copending application Serial No. 285,153, filed July 18, l939,'which has matured into Patent No. 2,175,959, for Tape dispensing and moistening machines.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved means for regulating the length of tape which is fed through the moistening ma chine.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved stop of this kind which is so con structed that the stop structure also forms a bearing or support for the drive shaft carrying the tape feeding structure and the means for tripping the tape severing structure as embodied in my copending application.
To the foregoing objects and to others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more specifically referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of this invention, but it is to be understood that changes,
' variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral lG designates generally a housing including side walls H and 52. The numeral it designates generally a drive shaft extending transversely of the housing H}. One end of the drive shaft it is journaled in a bearing member it, which is secured to the side wall 52 by fastening devices 55. The bearing member M includes an annular plate it provided with a reduced bearing or hub member 5'! having an opening or bore E8 in which one end of the shaft 53 is rotatably mounted. The plate it is provided with an inwardly offset annular member 99 engaging in an opening 228 formed in the wall it and the reduced marginal portion 2! of the plate it engages against the outer side of the wall l2 as shown in Figure 3.
A second bearing member 22 is provided for the shaft 53 and includes an annular plate 23 provided with an outer reduced hub portion 24 and an inner hub portion 25 which is relatively larger in diameter than the hub portion 2%. The plate 5 23 is provided with an inwardly oifset'annular member 2G engaging in an annular opening Z'l formed in the wall 9 5 about the shaft iii.
A clamping plate 28 having a central opening 2% engages about the inner hub member 25 and ii) is provided with an outwardly offset portion 3% having a diameter substantially equal to the diameter of the offset portion 25. The depth of the two offset portions 25 and 36 is substantially less than the thickness of the wall H so that when the two offset portions 26 and til are seated in the opening 2'5 a slight space will be provided between the confronting faces of these plates. A pair of clamping bolts 3! are extended through the clamping plate 28 with the head of each bolt seated in a recess 32 provided in the inner side of the plate 23. The bolt 35 extends through the plate 23, which is also provided with a relatively large recess 33 in which the inner end of a clamp-- ing nut 3% is adapted to seat. The clamping nuts 5 3d may be formed as wing nuts or the like so that these nuts may be readily loosened or tightened as will be hereinafter described.
The plate 23 on' the outer side thereof is provided with a stop member 35 adjacent the outer marginal portion thereof and is also provided with a plurality of circumferentially spaced apart graduations 35 having indicia 3i associated therewith. A pointer 38 is formed on the outer side of the wall it and the plate 23 is adapted to be :55 circumferentially adjusted relative to the pointer 23 in order to position the stop member 35 in the desired position. A handle or crank 39 is secured to the shaft l3 and is provided with an inwardly projecting arm ail which extends in- -lU wardly in the direction of the plate 23. This arm is disposesd in a position for engagement with the stop member 35 upon rotation of the crank 39. The stop member 35 is adapted to limit the forward swinging movement of the crank 39 at is which time the feed wheel Al mounted on the shaft as described in my copending applica tion, is rotated in a counter-clockwise direction to feed tape forwardly through the machine.
The operation of the Inoistening machine hereto in disclosed is more fully described in my 00- pending application Serial No. 285,153 and in my copending application filed at even date herewith the description of the presser plates 42 and it is more fully described.
In Figure 4 there is disclosed a slightly modified form of stop structure wherein a bearing member generally designated at 44 is formed, which is similar to the bearing member 22 and includes an outer hub portion 45 and an inner hub portion 46 substantially larger in diameter than the hub portion 45. An annular plate M is provided with an inwardly offset member 48 engaging in an annular opening 49 formed in the side wall 50 of the housing. A drive shaft is journaled through thehub members 45 and 46 and a crank 52 is fixed by means of a nut 53 to the shaft 5|. The inwardly offset portion 48 is provided on diametrically opposed sides of the hub 46 with a pair of inwardly projecting ribs 55. A nut 55 is adapted to engage between each pair of the ribs 54 and a bolt 55 is threaded into the nut 55 and is provided on its outer end with an annular flange or head 5'! engaging in an annular recess or seat 58 formed in the outer side of the plate 41. A wing or operator 59 is formed integrally with the bolt or screw 55 outwardly of the head or fiange 5i and is disposed between the plate 57 and the inner side of the handle or crank 52. There are two of these bolts or screws 55, but it will be understood that the plate 41 may be circumferentially adjusted by 'means of one or more of these bolts 55. A clamping member or outwardly projecting leg 65 is formed with each nut 55 and is adapted to engage against/the inner side of the side wall 53 as shown in Figure 4. A tightening of the bolt 56 will draw the nut outwardly and preferably a shoulder 5! is formed between each pair of ribs 5 3 adjacent the periphery of the hub 56. The inner end, of the nut 55 is adapted to engage against the shoulder 55 which forms a fulcrum for the clamping structure including the nut 5i and the right angular position and in order to facilitate the adjustment thereof and so that the user may be, apprized of the length of tape which is to be fed by the feeding wheel 5| the plate 23 may be adjusted to a predetermined graduation 35. This is accomplished by loosening the nuts 54 which will permit rotation of the two plates 23 and 28 in the opening 27. The crank 35 may then be rotated in a counter-clockwise direction as viewed in Figures l and 2 until the arm 46 engages the stop member 35. The crank 39 may then be released so as to permit the operation of the tape severing structure as more fully described in my copending application previously mentioned.
The structure shown in Figures 4 and 5 is adjusted similar to that shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 as the plate -l is provided with astop member similar to the stop member 35 and the plate i! is adapted to be adjusted to position this stop member in the desired position to limit the feeding movement effected by counterclockwise rotation of the shaft 5!.
A stop structure constructed according to this invention will not at any time interfere with the feeding or moistening mechanism embodied in the dispensing machine and this stop mechanism will not get out of order or in any way affect the use of the dispensing machine. This stop mechanism not only controls the length of tape which is fed forwardly through the dispensing machine by the feeding wheel 5 i, but it also provides a bearing or support for the drive shaft controlling the operation of the machine.
What I claim is:
1. In a tape dispensing machine, a housing, a shaft extending transversely of said housing, a tape feeding means carried by said shaft, a crank fixed to said shaft, bearing means for said shaft, means rotatably mounting said bearing means in said housing, means holding said bearing means in adjusted position, and coacting means carried by said bearing means and said crank for limiting the swinging movement of said crank in one direction.
2. In a tape dispensing machine, a housing having parallel sidewalls, a shaft extending transversely of said housing, a bearing fixed to one of said side walls, a second bearing engaging the other of said side walls, means securing said second bearing in circumferentially adjusted position relative to said shaft, a stop member carried by said second bearing, a crank fixed to said shaft and an extension carried by said crank engageable with said stop to limit the swinging movement of said crank in one direction.
3. In a tape dispensing machine, a housing having parallel side walls, a shaft extending transversely of said housing, a tape feeding means carried by said shaft, a bearing for said shaft and fixed to one of said side walls, a second bearing for said shaft, releasable clamping means engaging said second bearing and said housing for holding said second bearing in circumferentially adjusted position relative to said shaft, a crank fixed to said shaft and arm carried by said crank, and a stop member fixed to said second bearing disposed in the path of swinging movement of said arm whereby to limit the swinging movement of said crank in one direction.
4. In a tape dispensing machine, a housing having parallel side Walls, a shaft extending transversely of said housing, a tape feeding means carried by said shaft, a bearing for said shaft fixed to one of said side walls, a second bearing for said shaft, means securing said second bearing to another of said Walls in circumferentially adjusted position relative to said shaft, a crank fixed to said shaft, an arm carried by said crank projecting in the direction of a portion .of said second bearing, and a second stop carried by said second bearing disposed inthe path of swinging movement of said arm whereby to limit the swinging movement of said crank in one direction.
5. In a tape dispensing machine, a housing having parallel side walls, a shaft extending transversely of said housing, a bearing for said shaft fixed to one of said side walls, a tape feeding means carried by said shaft, a crank fixed to said shaft, a second bearing for said shaft engaging another of said side walls, said other side wall having an annular opening concentric to saidshaft, an inwardly offset annular member carried by said second bearing engaging in said opening, releasable holding means engaging said second bearing and said other wall for adjustably securing said second bearing circumferentially of said opening, an arm carried by said crank projecting in the direction of said other side wall, and a stop member carried by said second bearing disposed in the path of swinging movement of said arm to limit the swinging of said crank in one direction.
6. In a tape dispensing machine, a housing having a pair of parallel side walls, a shaft extending transversely of said housing. a tapefeeding means carried by said shaft, a crank fixed to one end of said shaft, a bearing fixed to one of said side walls and engaging the other end of said shaft, the other of said pair of walls having an annular opening concentric to said shaft, a second bearing including a hub provided with a bore to receive said shaft, a plate carried by said hub, an inwardly offset annular member carried by said plate engaging in said opening, an annular clamping plate disposed about said .hub interiorly of said housing, releasable holding means engaging through said clamping means and said inwardly offset member for adjustably clamping said plate circumferentially of said shaft, an arm carried by. said crank projecting in the direction of said other wall, and a stop member carried by said plate disposed in the path of swinging movement of said arm to thereby limit the swinging movement of said crank in one direction.

In a tape dispensing machine, a housing having a pair of parallel side walls, a shaft extending transversely of said housing, a tape feeding means carried by said shaft, a crank fixed to one end of said shaft, a stationary bearing carried by one of said side walls and engaging the opposite end of said shaft, a second bearing member including a hub having a bore to receive said shaft, a plate fixed to said hub engaging against the outer side of the other of said side walls, said other side wall having an annular opening concentric to said shaft, an inwardly projecting annular member carried by said plate engaging in said opening, a pair of parallel ribs carried by said inwardly projecting member, an L-shaped clamping member having one leg thereof engaging between said ribs and the other leg thereof extending in the direction of said other side wall, and threaded means engaging said clamping member and extending through said plate and said inwardly projecting member and adjustably clamping said second bearing relative to said opening, an arm carried by said crank, and a stop member carried by said second bearing exteriorly of said housing and disposed in the path of swinging movement of said arm to thereby limit the swinging movement of said crank in one direction.

In a tape dispensing machine, a housing, a shaft extending transversely of said housing, a crank fixed to said shaft, bearing means for said shaft, means rotatably mounting said bearing means in said housing, a stop lug carried by said bearing means on one side of said housing, an extension carried by said crank engageable with said lug, a pair of diametrically opposed clamping members for holding said bearing means in adjusted position, and tensioning means for said clamping members.
9. In a tape dispensing machine, a housing, a shaft extending transversely of said housing, a crank fixed to said shaft, bearing means for said shaft, means rotatably mounting said bearing means in said housing, a stop lug carried by said bearing means on one side of said housing, an
extension carried by said crank engageable with said lug, a pair of clamping members each having a portion thereof overlapping an adjacent portion of the bearing means and another portion thereof overlapping the adjacent portion of the housing and threaded tensioning means for said clamping members.
10. In a tape dispensing machine, a housing, a shaft extending transversely of said housing, a crank fixed to said shaft, bearing means for said shaft, means rotatably mounting said bearing means in said housing, a stop lug carried by said bearing means on one side of said housing, an extension carried by said crank engageable with said lug, a pair of clamping members each having a portion thereof overlapping an adjacent portion of the bearing means and another portion thereof overlapping the adjacent portion of the housing and means carried by said mounting means engageable with said clamping members for holding said clamping members against swinging movement.

In a tape dispensing machine, a housing, a shaft extending transversely of said housing, a crank fixed to said shaft, a bearing about said shaft adjacent said crank, a disc-shaped plate fixed to said bearing, said housing having an annular opening in a wall thereof about said bearing and of larger diameter than the external diameter of said bearing, an inwardly offset part carried by said plate rotatably engaging in said opening, a portion of said plate engaging in face abutting relation to the adjacent side of said wall, a lug fixed to said plate, an extension carried by said crank, engageable with said lug upon rotation of said shaft and crank, and clamping means engaging said inwardly offset part and the inner surface of said wall for holding said bearing in circumferentially adjusted position relative to said housing.

In a tape dispensing machine, a housing, a shaft extending transversely of said housing, a crank fixed to said shaft, 3, bearing about said shaft adjacent said crank, a disc-shaped plate fixed to said bearing, said housing having an annular opening in a wall thereof about said bearing and of larger diameter than the external diameter of said. bearing, an inwardly offset part carried by said plate rotatably engaging in said opening, a portion of said plate engaging in face abutting relation to the adjacent side of said wall, a lug fixed to said plate, an extension carried by said crank, engageable with said lug upon rotation of said shaft and crank, a pair of clamping members having a portion thereof overlapping said inwardly oifset part and another portion thereof overlapping the inner face of said wall, and threaded tensioning members engaging through said plate and threaded into said clamping members.
