Class 100 (2) Inking and damping apparatus.-In a flat bed offset printing machine of the kind having a reciprocating carriage 2 carrying the offset cylinder 3, an inking device consisting of a distributing roller 4 and inking rollers 5, the inking rollers are supported on levers 9, 10 pivoted about the axis of the distributing roller which is supported in bearings fixed to the carriage. The carriage is mounted on rollers 7 running on rails 8. Racks 11 on each side of the bed mesh with gear wheels 12 which, in turn, mesh with further gear wheels (not shown) on the shaft 14 of the distributing roller which is thereby rotated during reciprocation of the carriage. The spindles of the inking rollers carry wheels 22 adapted to engage rails 23 to lift the inking rollers out of engagement with the bed over the printing station. The inking rollers are biased downwardly by springs 21 connected between the levers 9, 10 and the carriage 2. The inking refers 5 are inked at the end of the stroke of the carriage 2 by standing on supply rollers 16 mounted beyond the end of the bed and driven by gear wheels 17, the gear wheels 12 being out of engagement with the rack in this position. In order to facilitate re-engagement of the gear 12 with the rack when the carriage is moved back over the bed there is provided a pivoted toothed continuation 18 of the rack 11 which is downwardly yieldable against a spring 20. The part 18 yields under the teeth of the wheel and rises to mesh with the wheel, when the teeth are in correct register. A damping device may be arranged on the other side of the cylinder 3 in the same manner as the inking device and including a brass roller 4<SP>1</SP> and damping rollers 5'.
