A four-cylinder sheet-fed offset perfecting press incorporates a device for starting and stopping printing wherein, under the control of a single control element, the offset cylinder of one unit and the plate cylinder of the second unit are applied and withdrawn in a particular order, i.e. for starting printing the offset cylinder of the first unit is applied against its plate cylinder, and simultaneously the plate cylinder of the second unit is applied against its offset cylinder, and then the two offset cylinders come together, and for stopping printing, as a result of faulty feed or the end of the printing run, the reverse sequence is observed. Fig. 1 illustrates a press in which the first unit is formed of plate cylinder 1 and offset cylinder 3, and the perfecting unit is formed of plate cylinder 2 and offset cylinder 4; cylinders 3 and 2 are mounted in eccentric bushings 11, 15 so that contact with associated cylinders can be tripped. Eccentric cams 7, 8 mounted to rotate on the shaft of fixed-position offset cylinder 4 co-operate with roller levers 5<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>11</SP>, when tripping or starting of impression is required, i.e. by a suitable small rotation of eccentric bushings 11, 15, pawls 18 and 19 are electromagnetically engaged with noses 16, 17 carried on levers 5<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>11</SP>, and the whole control lever 5 is rocked according to the curvature of cams 7, 8. Movement of lever 5 is transmitted by control rod 6 to double-arm lever 9, one arm of which is connected to bushing 11 by rod 10, and the other arm being connected via rod 12, double arm lever 13, and rod 14 to bushing 15. The cams are so curved (Figs. 2, 3, not shown) to produce the required order of application and withdrawal of cylinders. The second double-arm lever 13 enables engagement or disengagement of the two offset cylinders 3, 4 without disturbing plate cylinder 2.
