Class 75 (1) In a burner for the simultaneous combustion of liquid and gaseous fuels an auxiliary combustion chamber 3 for gaseous fuel is arranged around an atomizer 1 for liquid fuel so that the burning gas after leaving the chamber 3 impinges on the liquid fuel emerging from the atomizer, and the chamber 3 is fed exclusively with an oxygen-containing gas mixture. Part of the combustion air is fed through a tube 2 surrounding the atomizer 1. Preferably a gas-air mixture enters the chamber 3 from a supply chamber 4 through slits 5 at the inner edges of which flame stabilizing vortices are formed. Alternatively the stabilizing vortices may be formed by supplying the gas through circular apertures directed so that adjacent jets cross, or by supplying gas streams at different velocities. The mouth 7 of the chamber 3 converges almost to the cone of atomized fuel. A shield 6 protects the atomizer 1 from excessive heating by the gas flames. Secondary combustion air is supplied tangentially to the tubular main combustion chamber 8 through a conduit 9.
