Abstract
<PICT:1055585/C4-C5/1> A liquid or gaseous fuel burner may be used for partial combustion processes and comprises an annular conical channel 7 supplying a mixture of fuel and air or oxygen to a cup-shaped flame chamber 1, the surface of the end wall 4 of the flame chamber 1 being rearwardly inclined. The surface of the end wall 4 may be conical or curved. Water may be injected into a gaseous fuel stream, for producing hydrogen and carbon monoxide by partial combustion hydrocarbons with oxygen or air, through openings arranged in a circle in the end wall 4 around the annular conical channel 7 or in the inner or outer wall of the conical channel 7. The annular conical channel 7 is formed by an axially movable conical burner nozzle tip 6 mounted within a central conical opening 5 of the end wall 4. The conical opening 5 is of smaller cone angle than the nozzle tip 6. The nozzle tip 6 is connected to a cylindrical element 13 positioned by vanes 15 in a cylindrical opening 14 supplying air or oxygen to the annular conical channel 7. Liquid or gaseous fuel is fed by a channel 17 to an annular chamber 18 and through a slit 19 in the wall of the conical opening 5. The fuel may be alternatively fed from the inside wall of the annular conical channel 7. The front face 20 of the nozzle tip 6 may be conical, flat or rounded. The end wall 4 is axially movable in a hollow side wall 8 divided internally by a cylindrical baffle 9 for water cooling purposes. The end wall 4 may be water cooled. The nozzle tip may be water cooled and may have an axial channel supplying part of the fuel, the supply of steam for partial combustion processes, or the supply of oxygen alone for oxygen lancing or for the supply of a carrier gas togethe with slagging for steel making processes.
