A burner for burning heavy residuum oils and gas comprises a housing 24 mounted in an opening 16 in a refractory block 15 and spaced therefrom to form an air inlet 33, an open ended tube 48 extending through the housing 24 and spaced from the inner end thereof to form a discharge opening 50 for a gas/air mixture supplied to the housing by an inspirator 38, a burner tube 46 extending through the open ended tube 48 and having a nozzle 53 on its inner end, pipes 44, 45 for supplying atomizing steam and oil to the burner tube 46, and auxiliary gas burners 55, 56 mounted in a trough 32 in the inner face of the housing 24 and adapted to apply flames to unburned residuums falling from the refractory block 15. Each auxiliary gas burner 55, 56, Fig. 3, comprises a frutso-conical tip 53 mounted on a standpipe 59 having discharge ports 60, 61 protected by the tip 53. A smaller port 62 may be provided on the tip 53. Two auxiliary burners 55 are supplied with a gas/air mixture from the housing 24 by bores 63 in the wall thereof; the other two auxiliary burners 56 are supplied with raw gas by pipes 65. The trough 32 in which the auxiliary burners are mounted is formed by two annular rims 30, 31 on the housing 24, the inner rim 30 being higher than the outer rim 31. Ihe inspirator 38 comprises a gas nipple 40 and an adjustable air shutter 41. The open ended tube 48 is held centrally in the housing 24 by screws 49 extending therethrough.
