Abstract
Hydrocarbons of motor fuel boiling range are hydroformed by contacting with a catalyst comprising 4-15 per cent molybdena on activated alumina that has been treated with steam at 600-130- DEG F. and 20-100 p.s.i. for 10-50 hours, the hydroforming being effected at 800-1000 DEG F. and 50-1000 p.s.i. in the presence of 1000-4000 c.ft. of hydrogen-containing gas per barrel of feed. The catalyst may include 0.5-5 per cent by weight of silica. It may be prepared by hydrolysis of an aluminium alcoholate, e.g. with a silica hydrosol, and impregnation with ammonium molybdate as described in Specification 663,128. The steam treatment may be effected on the fluidized catalyst or a fixed bed. Activation prior to steaming is optional. Hydrogen or recycle gas of 50-70 vol. per cent hydrogen is passed through the reactor, and fixed bed, moving bed or fluid catalyst may be used. Examples describe the hydrolysis of aluminium amylate with water or silica hydrosol, and impregnation with ammonium molybdate to yield catalysts containing in parts by weight: 5 MoO3-95 Al2O3, and 10 MoO3-85.5 Al2O3-4.5 SiO2 respectively. Comparative data are given for hydroforming with these catalysts both with and without the steam pretreatment.ALSO:A catalyst for hydroforming hydrocarbons of motor fuel boiling range comprises 4-15 per cent. molybdena on activated alumina that has been treated with steam at 600-1300 DEG F. and 20-100 p.s.i. for 10-50 hours, the hydroforming being effected at 800-1000 DEG F. and 50-1000 p.s.i. in the presence of 1000-4000 c.ft. of hydrogen-containing gas per barrel of feed.
