Abstract

1287722 Hydrocarbon conversion catalysts UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 20 Jan 1970 2612/70 Heading B1E [Also in Division C5] A hydrocarbon conversion catalyst comprises at least one Group VIB metal and at least one Group VIII metal supported on a silica-alumina composite comprising from 35 to 65 weight per cent silica. The Group VIB metal(s) may constitute from 0.5 to 20 weight per cent of the catalyst and may be selected from chromium, molybdenum and tungsten; the Group VIII metal(s) may constitute from 0.1 to 10 weight per cent of the catalyst and may be selected from iron, cobalt, nickel, ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium and platinum. The catalyst may be prepared by known impregnation techniques using either a single solution containing both Group VIB metal and Group VIII metal or separate solutions each containing Group VIB metal or Group VIII metal, the resulting impregnated silica-alumina composite being dried, calcined in an oxygen-containing atmosphere at a temperature of from 1100 to 1700‹F and thereafter optionally reduced at a temperature of from 700 to 1000‹F in the presence of hydrogen. The single example relates to the preparation of catalyst containing tungsten and nickel by impregnating spheres of silica-alumina (60 wt % SiO 2 , 40 wt % Al 2 O 3 ) with an aqueous solution containing ammonium metatungstate and nickelous nitrate, the impregnated spheres being dried and calcined at 1100‹F.
