Class 124 A mechanically operated hammer comprises a casing, a cam member fixed to a sleeve assembly which is movable axially but not rotatably in the casing, a hammer member operated by the sleeve, a driving shaft rotatable but not axially movable in the casing, a cam on the forward end of this shaft co-acting with the cam on the sleeve, a spring acting between the sleeve and an abutment in the casing, a clutch between the driving shaft and a second shaft, and a spring acting to hold the members of the clutch in the disengaged position. As shown, a shaft 8, rotatably and axially movable at the rear end of a casing 1, has at its inner end a clutch member 7 co-acting with a clutch member 6 on a shaft having two parts 4 and 5 rotatable but not axially movable in the casing. A spring 10 urges the clutch members into the disengaged position. On the forward end of the part 5 of the shaft is fixed a cam 12 which co-acts with a cam 13 fixed in a sleeve 14 which may move axially in the casing but is prevented from rotating by a spline 16 sliding in a slot 15 in the sleeve. A spring. 25, which abuts an adjustable stop 26 in the casing, urges the cams 12, 13 into contact. Mounted on the forward end of the sleeve is a hammer 17 which strikes an anvil 19 which in turn strikes a tool holder 21 held in the casing by a ball 23 in a groove 22. The tool holder may easily be removed from the casing. A knurled sleeve 30 on the outside of the casing may be attached to the stop 26 by pins 27 moving in a slot in the casing and having three positions of rest to adjust the compression on the spring 25. A handle 34 may be pivoted to a strap 35 surrounding the casing. The end 11 of the shaft 8 may be attached to a coupling on an electric motor and the whole pressed against the work when the clutch 6, 7 will engage and set the percussive action into operation.
