An impact-wrench for screwing-up nuts &c., comprises a rotatable hammer, a dog-member slidably connected to the hammer for axial movement relative thereto and having one or more impact-jaws, a rotatable anvil adapted for connection with a driven member and having one or more impact-jaws, cam-means responsive to the rotary motion of the hammer to cam the dog-member into intermittent driving engagement with the anvil by way of the respective impact jaws, and yieldable or compression means to urge the dog-member away from the anvil. A shaft 24 projecting from a motor (not shown), preferably pneumatic, has a splined connection with a hammer 28. The forward end of the hammer is recessed to receive a dogmember 33 connected for axial movement within the hammer by a splined connection 34. The dog member is rotatable and slidable on a spindle 36 which is rotatable in the end of the motor-spindle, and at the other end fits into a bore in an anvil 48. The dog-member is forced to the right, against the hammer, by a spring 58 within the left-hand portion of spindle 36. Impact-jaws 40 on the dog member 33 correspond with similar jaws 69 on the anvil, but these clear one another in the non- impacting position of the parts, Fig. 1. The anvil is connected to a socket-wrench 72 &c., which engages the driven member such as a nut &c. The rear end of the dog-member has a pair of diametrically-opposite cam-parts 42, 43, Fig. 7, at different radii. Similar cam-parts 63, 64 on a cam-element 62 engage each 360 degrees with the cam-parts 42, 43. The cam-element 62 has a limited rotation relative to the shaft 36 through a pin-and-slot connection 67, the slots 66, Fig. 8, being wider than the pin diameter.
