Abstract

697,228. Blind-riveting. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and HENSHAW, J. N. Feb. 7, 1951 [Feb. 8, 1950], No. 3237/50. Class 83 (iv). A blind riveting tool comprises an easilyhandled portion including abutment means for holding a rivet up to the work and deforming - member - engaging means, e.g. mandrel-gripping jaws for setting the rivet, and a separate body portion (resting on the floor) comprising power-operated actuating means, the two portions being interconnected by a flexible cable, e.g. a Bowden cable. The easily-handled portion includes mandrelgripping jaws 135, Fig. 1, operated as described in Specification 693,109. The slidable sleeve 131 containing the jaws carries a pin 147 bridging two links 149; the latter are pivoted by links 153 to the casing 123, and are rocked by the Bowden cable 77 engaging a pin 157. The flexible sleeve 79 for the cable is secured at 163. Normally the stiffness of the cable 77 holds the pin 157 and sleeve 131 in the positions shown in Fig. 1 in which the jaws 135 are open. The separate body portion, Fig. 2, which rests on the floor, includes a shaft 17 driven continuously by an electric motor P, and connected through hypocyclic reduction gearing A and an Oldham coupling 41 with a shaft 25, carrying a splined cam 49. A roller 103, slidable under spring pressure in a fixed housing 109, is normally held out of contact with a groove 99 in the cam by a detent 117. In operation, the stem of a mandrel and rivet assembly is inserted in the jaws 135, Fig. 1, and a latch 145 is actuated as described in Specification 693,109 so that the jaws grip the stem. The rivet is held up to the work by the nose-piece 127 and actuation of a trigger 169 energizes a solenoid 167, Fig. 2, to trip the detent 117 through a link 179 and allow the roller 103 to drop into the cam groove 99. The cam 49 is thereupon moved to the left in, Fig. 2, pulling the core 77 of the Bowden cable which is connected thereto through a sleeve 61 and thrust bearing 57, whereby the links 149 are rocked and the jaws 135 pulled back to set the rivet and break the stem. Return of the cam 49 to the position of Fig. 2 raises the roller 103, release of trigger 169 allowing detent 117 to hold it raised. Specifications 348,818, 405,993, 459,973, [all in Group VII], 504,928; 558,156, 578,104 and 687,938, [all in Group VII], also are referred to.
