Abstract

665,207. Blind riveting. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and HENSHAW, J. N. Jan. 16, 1950 [Jan. 15, 1949], No. 1198/49. Class 43. In a blind riveting tool of the type wherein actuation of manually operated setting means causes movement of an actuating device away from abutment means, which hold the rivet up to the work, so that gripping jaws first move relative to the actuating device to grip a mandrel and then move with the actuating device to pull the mandrel, a clutch device acts, on the return stroke of the operating means, to prevent movement of the mandrel gripping means and thereby to allow separation of the jaws before the latter move towards the abutment with the actuating device, reverse movement of said operating means at any time during the return stroke causing the jaws to grip the mandrel again to apply any further pull necessary to complete the setting. The tool resembles in many respects that described in Specification 348,818, being similarly operated by lazy tongs mechanism. The mandrel-gripping jaws are fixed to and urged apart by leaf springs attached to a block 39 which is urged to the left, Fig. 2, by a spring 40. Two rollers 51, 53, situated on opposite sides of a wedge-shaped tail 55 of the block 39 and spring-urged to the right in slots 65, 67 in the sleeve 27 act to engage plates 57, 59 fixed to the casing 11. On extending the lazy tongs on a return stroke, the sleeve 27 is moved to the left whereupon the mandrel-gripping jaws separate, the clutch device, due to the action of the rollers 51, 53 on the plates 57, 59, initially preventing movement of the block 39 and hence axial movement of the jaws. After separation of the jaws the ends 69, 71 of the slots 65, 67 engage the rollers 51, 53 so that the jaw assembly then moves to the left with the sleeve 27. If a rivet is not completely set after one stroke, the. operator extends the lazy tongs a short way to allow the jaws, after separation, to slide further down the mandrel stem, and then collapses the tongs again, which are thus used at good mechanical advantage during completion of the setting. Specifications 490,047, 504,928, 507,358, 568,013, [Group XXII], and 613,882 also are referred to.
