Abstract

1463254 Riveting R F HIRSCH 19 March 1975 [25 July 1974] 11335/75 Heading B3U A blind riveting tool comprises a magazine 100 for laterally feeding rivets 3 into a housing 11, a slide member 30 for advancing a rivet 3 from the magazine 100 to a setting position, means 60, 61 for releasably locking the slide member 30 at the setting position, mandrel gripping jaws 38, 39 carried by and movable relative to the slide member 30 and a slide member 15 for pulling the jaws 38, 39 to set the rivet 3. In operation, the slide member 15 is moved into contact with the nose 12 of the housing 11 by a piston 86 and the slide member 30 is moved by a piston 76 to push a rivet 3 from the magazine 100 formed by corrugated paper to its setting position. The leading end of the slide member 30 is bifurcated to form jaws 32, 33 which grip the rivet mandrel 7 as well as gripping jaws 38, 39 mounted on spring biased rods 44, 45 movable in bores 48, 49 in abutments 46, 47 on the slide member 30. The slide member 30 is locked in its forwardmost position by pawls 60, 61 engaging the abutments 46, 47 so that when the fluid supply to the pistons 76, 86 is reversed only the outer slide member 15 is moved rearwardly causing a shoulder 16 at its front end to pull the gripping jaws 38, 39 rearwardly to set the rivet 3. During the rearward movement of the slide member 15, an arm 121, Fig. 2, is pivoted by an abutment 127 causing the magazine 100 to be advanced to align a space between a pair of magazine corrugations, Fig. 9, with the broken mandrel 7. When abutments 22, 23 on the slide member 15 unlock the pawls 60, 61, the slide member 30 is moved rearwardly causing first the jaws 38, 39 and then the jaws 32, 33 to be spread apart by magazine guide plates 111, 112 releasing the broken mandrel 7 which is deposited between the magazine corrugations. The arm 121 is pivoted again by an abutment (133) (Fig. 11, not shown) on the slide member 30 engaging a pivotable arm 130 causing the next rivet 3 in the magazine 100 to be aligned with the slide member 30 and the broken mandrel 7 to be pushed along until it reaches a discharge shoot 116.
