[Class 43] A rivet feed device for a riveting gun, which is moved in step-by-step fashion with the barrel along the mandrel during successive riveting operations, comprises a housing which makes a tight fit in the barrel of the gun and in which a plunger is mounted to slide, the plunger gripping the housing on moving forwardly in relation to it on the feed stroke, but allowing for a relative movement on the setting stroke. The housing has a rigid forward extension which makes contact wih an abutment at the nose of the gun to release the mandrel gripping means and permit it to be withdrawn for reloading the gun with rivets. In the form shown, the feed device is employed in a gun having a jaw mechanism constructed as described in Specification 578,104, and comprises a housing 43 held frictionally in the barrel of the gun by an expansion spring. A plunger 46, having rigid extension arms 40, is free to slide in the housing 43 under the action of a spring 48, the arrangement being such that on the working or setting stroke of the mandrel 9, when it moves rearwardly relatively to the barrel, the plunger 46 is pressed rearwardly under the action of a spring 41 to permit relative movement between mandrel and barrel while, on the rivet feed stroke, when the barrel 7 moves rearwards relatively to the main casing and mandrel 9 under the action of a spring which extends between a sleeve in the nose of the main casing and a piston carried by the barrel, balls 50 mounted to move radially in openings in the plunger 46 co-operate with a tapered part 52 in the tail of the housing 43 to grip the mandrel. When the last rivet has been fed between the jaws the extensions 40 contact the rear face of a flange 96 of the jaw mechanism 8 to first move a tube 33 into contact with the pivoted jaws 22, 23 against the action of a spring 31, and then, through continued further movement of the housing 43, the plunger 46 is pushed rearwardly against the action of spring 48 to move the balls 50 to release the mandrel to permit its withdrawal for reloading. The mandrel tail chuck shown is described in Specification 578,106 and the pneumatic or hydraulic control and operation of the gun in Specification 578,105.
