Abstract

1,091,962. Riveting. HUCK MANUFACTURING CO. March 30, 1965 [July 22, 1964], No. 13528/65. Heading B3U. A tool 20 for swaging a tubular collar 18, Fig. 1, on to a fastener 10 comprises a body 23 having a cylindrical bore 25, a fluid-actuated piston 40 movable in the bore, a holder 52 carrying anvil means 58 for swaging the collar, and a spring 47 for moving the piston in the opposite direction to the fluid actuated means. the anvil means being responsive to the movement of the piston in one direction to move into swaging contact with the collar and being released from the collar when the piston moves in the other direction. The anvil 58 is formed of two or more parts forming a cylinder and having an inner conical surface 58a and an outer conical surface 63 which engages a frustoconical bore 57 in the holder 52. A circlip 60 is received in a groove 61 in the anvil parts and limits the forward movement of the anvil. The groove is wider than the thickness of the circlip. A sleeve 81 abuts the end face of the anvil and carries a circlip 83 which is engaged by the forward end of the piston 40 when it moves to the left. Behind the sleeve 81 are tapered chuck jaws 72 which are internally grooved to engage a grooved portion 17 of the fastener, when the jaws move radially inwards as the piston 40 moves to the right. The tool has a handle (21), Fig. 3 (part not shown) provided with a trigger (90) operating an electrical switch in the circuit of a motor driving an hydraulic pump. Pressure fluid passes through passages 97 and 99 to move the piston to the right. Operation.-The tool is placed on the assembly of workpieces and fastener shown in Fig. 1 and actuated by the trigger (90). As the piston 40 moves to the right the jaws 72 grip the portion 17 and the reaction on the body 23 causes the anvil 58 to be forced into swaging engagement with the collar 18. After the collar has been swaged the fastener fractures at a break-neck 16 and the pintail passes through the tool and is ejected through a slot 37 in a rubber guard 33. When the trigger 90 is released the spring 47 moves the piston 40 to the left, it engages the circlip 83 on the sleeve 81 and through the sleeve moves the anvil 58 forward in the holder 52. This forward movement permits the anvil 58 to expand radially and to be released from the collar 18. In a modification, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown) the sleeve 81 is omitted or made integral with the anvil (158) the axial movement of which is limited by a circlip (160). The groove (161) in which the circlip is received is wider than the thickness of the circlip. The anvil has two longitudinally extending slots (164) and a cut (165) is made through one of the slots to define a split anvil construction. The chuck jaws (172) directly engage the rear end of the anvil. The setting action occurs as in the previous embodiment, but in this modification as the piston (140) moves to the left the anvil (158) is released from the collar 18 by the action of a spring (176) upon a sleeve (177) and the chuck jaws (172).
