Abstract

564,929. Riveting. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and COOPER, B. P. April 8, 1943, No. 5593. [Class 43] A tool for pop-riveting comprises an abutment 11 to engage a rivet head, means to engage a portion of the mandrel stem M to bend it out of alignment with an adjacent stem portion, and means arranged to cause rectilinear movement of the bending means axially of the rivet to impart a pull to the mandrel stem when in the bent condition. A slide 19 comprises a base-plate 21 having grooves to receive the mandrel stem on either side of a gap 31, the groove nearer the abutment plate 11 being serrated. A slide 41 above the base-plate guides three plungers 33, 35, 37, the first and last being opposite the grooves and the middle plunger opposite the gap and bevelled to an edge. The plungers have heads normally urged outwardly by springs 59 and engaged by a plate 45 co-operating with a cam 53 actuated by a hand lever 51 for bending the mandrel stem. The slide 19 is moved to give the usual pull to the mandrel by a hand-actuated lazy tongs connected to a rod 63. A spring plunger 60 ejects the mandrel stem when the grip is released.
