Abstract
470,594. Marking nuts. RICHARDS & SONS, Ltd., C., and RICHARDS, P. R. June 16, 1936, No. 16712. [Class 83 (iv)] Nuts are marked on opposite faces by a pair of spring-loaded punches 17 striking simultaneously or successively, the withdrawal of the punch actuating a lever and reciprocating nut-holding slide 6, to drop the nut out of its holder 42 and allowing the bottom nut of a stack to drop into its place to be marked. The punch holders 7 and 16 are coupled together to move towards the nut by hand lever 12 or power, one being actuated by rack and pinion 9. When the dies touch the nut the die holder 7 continues forward, compressing a hammer spring 29 until a cam surface 33 slides a sleeve 37 up until its bore aligns with the hammer 27 which being released thereby, is forced by the spring 29 to strike the inner end of the die holder 17 to mark the nut. A spring 36 resets the sleeve 37 out of alignment for the next marking. The other punch may act similarly or may be merely a spring-pressed die which is forced back by the impact of the first die and then rebounds to mark the nut. The strength of the blow may be adjusted by adjusting the axial position of the end cap 30 against the abutting hammer spring 29. A spring 45 normally holds the work slide 6 in position, but if it is not in position a stop 51 on the lever 47 fouls a stop 52 on the punch holder and prevents actuation. The column of nuts is held in position by shaped side strips 39 adjusted to accommodate various sizes of nuts.
