A suitable shaped below said flange to provide a broad flat bearing surface 28 reaching from the foremost end of the lower jaw to the rearmost end of the head proper. Against this bearing surface 28 the supplemental jaw 9 is held by a heavy pivot bolt 29, it being observed that the body of said jaw is in the form of an elongated bar rectangular in cross section bearing against said broad fiat surface 28 from end to end thereof, Said supplemental jaw has formed on its forward end an upstanding die-carrying portion 31 which is disposed in alignment with the punch-guiding portion 32 of the upper aw. The die-carrying portion 31 is bored from end to end and internally threaded as shown in Fig. 3 for carrying the threaded die element 11 which may be adjusted axially in said bore as will be obvious. It will be observed that the die-carrying portion 31 extends within close proximity to the punch guiding portion 32 so as to support the die in proper relation to the punch and consequently provides a restricted mouth or passage between the punch and die. This restricted passage may be enlarged by swinging the supplemental aw on its pivot 29 from the full line position to the dotted line position shown in Fig. l for the purpose of permitting larger and more irregular work-pieces or parts to be inserted between the punch and die than could possibly be inserted when said die is in its normal operative position. The supplemental jaw is in the form of a lever which may be swung into and out of its operative position by manipulation of its rear end 33 which constitutesa handle. Suitable means may be employed for releasably holding the supplemental jaw in the operative position and at present I employ a spring-pressed plunger or locking bolt 34-, shown in Fig. 5', carried by the supplemental lower jaw and adapted to enter a locating hole 35 in the head 6 which determines the operative position of said jaw. A coiled spring 36 on the plunger acting at one end against the head of the latter and at the opposite end against a guide 37 which carries the plunger and which in turn is fixed to the supplemental jaw, yieldingly holds the plunger 34 in its locating hole. The plunger may be withdrawn by means of a finger grip 38 on its outer end, thereby permitting the supplemental jaw to be swung to the dotted line position shown in Fig. l for widening the work-receiving opening. \Vhen the supplemental jaw is swung back the plunger will snap in the locating hole 35 and rigidly hold said jaw in its operative position.
By reason of the lever formation of the supplemental lower jaw it may be quickly and conveniently manipulated. This is especially desirable in practice because punches of this kind are used on a great variety of work-pieces and the time element and convenience with which the punch is set in operative relation to the work-piece is an important factor in the practicability of such tool. This will be readily appreciated when it is considered that the lower jaw 9 must be moved twice each time the punch is used, that is, once for setting the punch in position and once for removing the punch. It will also be observed that the lever formation of the lower jaw afiords a broad flat bearing surface against the lower jaw and head proper so that the supplemental jaw will be held in absolute alignment. The heavy pivot bolt and plunger provide a substantial support for the supplemental jaw adapted to carry the heavy punching pressures without deflection. The foregoing construction increases the utility of the punch by permitting its use on many types of work-pieces which heretofore were inaccessible with a punch of conventional construction.
It is believed that the foregoing conveys a clear understanding of the objects prefaced above and while I have illustrated but a single working embodiment it should be understood that changes might be made in details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the appended claims, in which I claim 1. A punchcomprising a head having an upper punch-carrying jaw and a lower aw spaced apart to provide a comparatively wide mouth, punch operating means mounted on the head, a lever pivoted on the lower jaw and providing a supplemental lower jaw having a die-carrying portionextending, across the mouth formed by said upper and lower jaws with the die therein normally close to and aligned with the punch, and means forreleasably holding the lever in an operative position with its die-carrying portion in alignment with the punch in order to permit swinging the supplemental jaw away to make the wider space between the main jaws available for entering-a piece of work.
- 2. A punch comprising a head having an mounted on the head, a lever pivoted on the lower aw and providing a supplemental ill) lower jaw extending somewhat above the lane of the lower jaw across the mouth ormed by said upper and lower jaws, said lever having a broad fiat side extending rearwardly from said mouth and bearing against a complemental side of the lower jaw and head, a die-carrying portion on said supplemental lower jaw and means for 7 wide releasably holding the supplemental lower jaw in an operative position with its dieoarrying portion in alignment with the punch.
A punch comprising a head having an upper punch-carrying jaw and a lower jaw spaced apart to provide a comparatively mouth, punch operating means mounted on the head, a lever pivoted on the lower jaw and providing at its outer end a supplemental lower jaw extending in its operative position substantially horizontally somewhat above the plane of the lower jaw across the mouth formed by said upper and lower jaws, a die-carrying porhead, a die-carrying part pivoted on thelower jaws and adapted to be swung into and out of operative position, in the latter of which positions to provide a greater clear ance between the punch and die-carrying part, and means operative between the head and die-carrying part for releasably holding the latter in its operative position.

A punch comprising a head'having an upper punch-carrying jaw. and a lower jaw spaced apart to provide a comparatively wide mouth, a punch slidable in said upper jaw, a punch operating lever pivoted on the head, a die-carrying part pivoted on the lower jaw and having an upstanding die-carrying portion at its outer end positioned in proximity to and in alignment with said punch and adapted to be moved away from said position by pivotal move ment of said part for widening the opening at the entrance to said month between the punch and die-carrying parts, and means for releasably holding said die-carrying part in its operative position.
6. A punch comprising a head having formed integrally therewith an upper, punch guiding jaw and a lower jaw, a punch slidable in said upper jaw, punchoperating meansmounted on the head, a supplemental jaw'pivoted on said lower jaw and having an upstanding die-carrying portion extending into proximity to and alignment with said punch in the operative position of said jaw and being movable upon its pivot for withdrawing said die-carrying portion from said operative position for wideningthe entrance to said mouth, and
means for releasably holding the supplemental jaw in said operative position.
