Abstract

694,428. Blind riveting. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). Oct. 26, 1950 [Oct. 27, 1949], No. 27541/49. Class 83 (iv). Relates to hand operated tools for use in blind riveting with tubular rivets and consists in means for gripping the stem of the mandrel that retains the rivet and mandrel assembly in the tool during the placing of the assembly in the work but permits the ejection of the broken-off part of the stem during the return stroke. The abutment 46, for the rivet flange, is formed by the end of a nose-piece 40 screwed to a tubular extension 38, in which slides a plunger 50 having a yoke 84 projecting through a slot in the nose, and a connecting cross-pin 52 for the tubular end of the body 10 of the tool. The extension 38 has a cross-pin 34 passing through slots 36 in the tubular part 10 and forming a connection with a plunger 28 pivoted at 32 to one link 12 of a hand-lever operated toggle mounted on the body. A compression spring 30 is confined between the ends of the plungers 28 and 50. The plunger 50 houses a spring-operated ejector pin 60 and the gripping- jaws 68, 70 for the mandrel, the jaw 70 being connected to the yoke by a toggle-link 80 and spring 88 and having a guide-pin 86 passing freely through a hole in the yoke and on the initial position of application of the tool, bearing against the end 48 of the bore of the nose. In this position an assembly of mandrel 58 and tubular rivet 62 is inserted in the bore 56 of the nose and 54 of the plunger 50 pushing back the ejector and being retained by the jaws 68, 70 under the pressure of the spring 88 that exerts a light grip sufficient to resist the pressure of the ejector spring. The hand lever is operated to straighten the toggle and move the plunger 50 away from the abutment 46, tightening the grip of the jaws on the mandrel stem and setting the rivet by drawing the head 64 of the mandrel therein, as shown. The mandrel then breaks at the weakened section 66. A notched detent 90, Fig. 7, pivoted in the nose 40 at 92 and fitted with a control spring 96 engages a tooth 94 carried by the toggle link 80 and retains it during the first part of the return stroke of the plunger 60, releasing the mandrel stem and permitting the ejector spring to operate. During the latter part of the stroke a shoulder 95 on the yoke engages the link 80, forces the tooth 94 from the detent and returns the parts to their initial position. In a modification the detent 90 is replaced by a C-shaped wire spring. Specifications 348,818, 405,993, 490,047, [all in Group VII], 604,928, 607,358, 664,383 and 613,882, [both in Group VII], are referred to.
