564,383. Riveting. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., MELLERIO, L. P., and COOPER, B. P. Dec. 4, 1942, Nos. 17245/42 and 19537/43. [Class 43] In " pop-riveting '' the mandrel is severed, beyond the rivet, while the pull on the mandrel is being maintained, the cut being such as to deform the shank of the mandrel and prevent the head portion dropping out of the rivet. The tool is held by a handle 3 and a handle at the end of a lazy-tongs linkwork adapted to pull on the mandrel M, the links 17 of the lazy-tongs being pivoted at 19 and carrying rolls 13 engaging recesses in a head 9 moving with the clamp 45 for the mandrel. The knives 55, 57 are each carried by a lever 61, 63 moved about a virtual centre by links 95 forming a toggle joint actuated by pressure on an adjustable screw 105. This screw is in the path of a head on the fulcra of levers 27, 31, which actuate'the levers 17, springs 121 allowing yield when a predetermined tension has been applied to the mandrel. An adjustable screw 127 may limit the retraction of the mandrel by contact with the head 9. The knives are formed to sever the rivet and form a flared fishtail F to ensure the retention of the part shown of the mandrel as a plug in the rivet.
