A tool for extracting clinched staples comprises a hooked jaw member J slidably held between a housing H and anvil A, rearward movement of the jaw relative to the anvil being resisted by spring means. In use, the tapered, forked end of the anvil is brought into contact with the bridge of the staple and the, jaw which overlies the staple is retracted, the hooked end drawing the staple onto the fork. The tool, Figs. 2 and 6, for table use has a base A provided with spaced prongs 14. The housing H attached to the base by screws 31 and 33 has a rear part R forming a thumb rest. The jaw member J, provided with a claw 15, has spaced side members 17 slidable on the outside of side faces 18 of the housing, and projecting wings W for finger operation. A U-shaped spring 24 accommodated in a longitudinal recess in the housing is trained around a stud 25, the ends 26 being hooked to lugs 28 on the jaw member. An internally threaded ferrule 20 fixed to the housing receives the screw 33 and slides in a slot 22 in the jaw member, the rear end of the slot limiting the forward movement of the jaw. The wings W coact with the lateral lugs 19 on the thumb rest to limit the rearward movement of the jaw. In a modification, Fig. 11, the manually held tool has a sliding jaw provided with a thumb rest 60 and a stud 61 which is guided in the gap 62 in the fork F<SP>1</SP> for ejecting the staple from the fork on return movement of the jaw. Depending side members 58 on the jaw member slidably engage with the interior surface of the side walls of the housing H' and rails 54 on the anvil A<SP>1</SP>. The spring 64 is hooked to lugs 65 and 66 on the jaw member and anvil respectively. A reduced nipple 56 on a boss 55 on the anvil slides in a slot 57 in the jaw member, the ends of the slot limiting the movement of the jaw.
