[Class 89 (iii)] In a desk or bench type stapling machine having an opening in the plunger housing to permit front loading, the opening normally is closed by a plate which constitutes the front wall of the driver guideway and can be slid upwardly against a spring to expose the opening. The plunger housing 29 is U-shaped, Fig. 5, and is closed in front by a detachable plate 49 formed with the opening 51 for front loading. Slidable within the U is a plate 33 which constitutes the front wall of the driver guideway and has rearwardly-extending wings 32 which act as side guides for the driver plunger 30, which is guided at the rear by a plate 35 which has a horizontal limb 37 serving as the upper wall of the staple guideway at the front of the magazine. The plate 33 has wings, not shown, by which it can be raised against the plunger spring 48 for loading the magazine through the opening 51, or for clearing a jammed staple. The staple magazine 11, which may be integral with the handle 10 and housing 29, is of inverted U-shape and houses a U-shaped staple-supporting bar 13, Fig. 4, secured in it by screws 27 and a detachable plate 28. The U of the bar 13 houses a rod 21 held between front and rear blocks 22, 24, on which are mounted a pusher spring 26 and a slidable block 20 which is secured to the pusher 17 and has a pin 18 upstanding through a slot in the magazine. The pin has a knurled screw head 54 for withdrawing the pusher for loading, and a plate 58 adapted to engage a groove 56 in the magazine to lock the pusher in withdrawn position. By removing the screws 27, the bar 13, rod 21, spring 26 and pusher 17 may be removed as a unit from the magazine. The housing 29 and handle 10 may be formed as separate metal pressings. The side walls of the housing 29 may be inturned at the front to guide the plate 33. The bar 13 may be adjustable in the magazine to vary the width of the staple-guiding passage. The plate 58 may be replaced by a pivoted catch plate. The pusher spring may be arranged above the magazine. Specifications 613,095 and 613,100 are referred to.
