Abstract

910,148. Stapling-machines. RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF EXPERIMENTAL SURGICAL APPARATUS & INSTRUMENTS. Sept. 2, 1959, No. 29913/59. Class 89 (3). [Also in Group VI] A hand stapling machine for ligaturing blood vessels with metal staples comprises a hooked jaw 11 for reception of a blood vessel, a staple magazine 15 slidable along the instrument towards the jaw by moving a first handle 39 on a push-rod 37 towards a second handle 12, continued movement of the first handle causing a pair of staples to be driven out of the magazine to engage inclined recesses 14 in the jaw and to be bent thereby to encircle and ligature the blood vessel. The body 10 of the device carries a hooked jaw at one end and the second handle 12 at the other, the push-rod 37 being slidable towards the jaw against a spring 40 within the body 10. The magazine has a pair of transverse lugs 18, 19 each having a U-shaped slot 20, 21 which receives staples. The staples are fed transversely one at a time from each slot into two parallel staple guides 16, 17 by staple feeders 22, 23 operated by leaf-springs 25, 27. Staple drivers 29, 30 are connected for movement with an actuating rod 31 in the magazine. The actuating rod 31 is screwed to the push-rod 37. In use, projection of the push-rod first moves the magazine into engagement with the blood vessel in the crook of the jaw 11 and then projects the actuating rod 31 and staple drivers 29, 30 relative to the magazine against a second spring 35, so that the staples are forced out of the guides 16, 17, engage the recesses in the jaw and are bent into triangular form around the blood vessel. A lug 42 on a leaf-spring 41 fixed adjacent the first handle 39 permits only limited relative movement between the handles until the lug is depressed, thus preventing accidental discharge of the staples.
