[Also in Group VI] A hand-stapling device comprises a hooked frame 1 and a clamping rod 4 between which an organ to be sutured by the staples is gripped and a staple driver plate 9 which is actuated by a single thrust on a movable handle 7 to eject staples from a magazine 13 on the clamping rod and bend them against recesses in a die 3 fixed on the hooked frame, the arrangement being such that the staples extend across the line of suture. The body 1 of the device has a hook 2 which carries the die 3. The clamping rod 4 is slidable in the body 1 and has a box-like head 12 which receives the staple magazine 13. Tissue to be sutured is clamped between the hook and the head of the clamping rod the position of which is adjustable relative to the body by a nut 6. A pivotal handle 7 is movable relative to a fixed handle 5 and has a portion 11 which engages a rod 10 which is slidable within the clamping rod and carries a staple driving plate 9, having teeth corresponding to slots 13<1> in the magazine. The pivotal handle carries a lever 18, 19 which in one position abuts a projection 20 on the fixed handle to lock the pivotal handle in inoperative position and which in another position permits the pivotal handle to be moved towards the fixed handle against a spring 8. When the handles are squeezed together, the staple-driving plate 9 is projected so that the staples are driven simultaneously from the magazine to pierce the tissue and are bent against the die recesses. The magazine slots and the die recesses are arranged so that the staples are positioned parallel to one another. A strip of fibrin is clamped over the slots of the magazine by a clamp 16 so that in the event that the tissue to be sutured is not as wide as the height of the magazine, surplus staples ejected from the magazine will be caused to grip the fibrin strip and may be removed.
