Abstract

1,234,035. Stapling devices. MALLETTS (SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS) Ltd. 11 Oct., 1968 [12 Sept., 1967], No. 41616/67. Heading B4C. [Also in Division A5] A pair of forceps 10 for setting a staple 20 are formed from stainless steel and have one jaw 16 pivoted to a second jaw 15 carrying an anvil 23 to set the staple, the first jaw 16 having a head (18) at its free end to support the staple and a cage 19 which surrounds the head, is movable relative thereto, and supports and guides the staple, the cage 19 being integral with one end of a flat leaf spring 21 the other end of which is secured to jaw 16. A slide 24 is secured to the inner face of the first jaw 16 by a screw (25) through an elongated slot in the slide. The slide 24 is movable by a finger grip 26 so that it can retain the staple against the head 18 when it is moved forward, the crown of the staple being seated in a recess 28 cut into the head. As the jaws are closed, the anvil depresses the cage relative to the head, exposing fully the ends of the staple and sets the staple as its ends penetrate through the tissues to be stapled (not shown). A cam 31 formed on the inner face of the second jaw 15 engages a camming surface (30) formed in the slide 24 as the jaws are closed causing the slide to move back from the head 18 and so releasing the staple. This embodiment allows staples to be inserted and set in tissues with the plane of the staple perpendicular to both the plane of the forceps and the plane of the slide 24. A second embodiment is generally similar to the first but is adapted to allow the staple to be set with its plane perpendicular to the retaining slide and parallel to the plane of the forceps.
