5 Claims.
This invention is concerned with. improvements iny a portable tacker or fastener driving device which is adapted to drive a U-.shaped staple into a surface of Wood, cardboard or similar material.
More particularly', the invention is concerned with a fastener drivingdevice of the type which comprises a forward chamberhaving a vertical fastener guidevvay therein, a reciprocal-driving plunger in the driveway, abottom horizontally disposed fastener feeding. chamber provided with means for delivering fasteners todriving position beneath the ,plunger and va plunger actuating mechanism which is operated by a pivotal rearwardly directed handlemember. In this type of fastener driving device, clogging sometimes occurs in the narrow guidewaythrough 4which the 'staplesare driven due to one or. more of the staples being too large-or too small or of incorrectform. To permit the .guideway to be cleared when this occurs a section of the front lwall of theguideway is made removable.
An object of the present invention is to pro vide in a fastenerdriving device ofthe type described, an improved `mechanism for effecting quick and easy release of a removablel section of thefront wall of the fastener guideway and accurate-,quick `and easy replacement of the same;
Another object of theiinv'en-tion iste provide a fastenerdevice or" thetype describedhaving a movable front wall section in combination with mounting means therefor which permits the section to bereadily and easily moved to expose the end of the fastener guideway without disconnecting the section from the device and which` insures rapid and accurate restoring of the section to guideway forming position.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the lartfrom a description of the preferredv form thereof which is shown by -vvay of illustration in the Vaccompanying drawings, wherein:

A, staple .supplyzand deverymechanism 2"' isarranged beneath 'the bumper block 24' in the horizontal chamber or magazine 28 formed by the side frame members I2, I3 and the bottom frame member 29. The chamber 28 extends rearwardly from the driving head I I and the staple delivery mechanism 21 is removable at the rear to re-load the device with a supply of the staples 30.
The front flanges I4 and I5 of the side plates I2 and I3 are cut away at their lower portions terminating at 3I and 32. Aremovable front wall section or member 33 forms the lower front portion of the guideway for the staple driving blade 2l. The member 33 includes rearwardly extending side arms or flanges 34 and 35 which are adapted to embrace the lower portions of the side walls I2 and I3 of 'the head II. The arms 34 and 35 are provided in their upper portions with rearwardly opening notches 36, 31 for receiving the projecting ends of the pin 38 which extends transversely of the head I I and the ends of which form projecting indexing studs for cooperation with the notches to properly position the member 33 on the head I I. Y
The front wall section 33 is provided with an aperture 39 in its forward face which is in alignment with the staple feeding chamber 28. The aperture 39 will frequently permit the removal of a jammed staple without removal of the member 33. This feature of the illustrated device does not constitute part of the invention but is the subject matter of the co-pending application of Kenneth F. Morberg, Serial No. 717,691, led Dec. 20, 1946.
The front wall section 33 is permanently connected to the device by link members 40, 4I and the pivotally mounted yoke member 44. The link members 49 and 4I are pivotally connected at 42 n and 43 to the rearwardly extending arms 34 and 35 of the member 33 adjacent the lower edge thereof and extend rearwardly therefrom to the rear edge ofthe yoke member 44 being pivotally connected thereto at 45, 46. The yoke member 44 is generally U-shaped with legs 41 and 43 extending downwardly and embracing the side walls of the magazine forming portion 49 of the frame I9. The legs 41 and 48 are pivotally connected at 59 and 5I to the frame portion 49, the pivot points 50 and 5I being spaced forwardly of the pivotal connections 45 and 46. and slightly above a line connecting the pivot points 42, 45 and 43, 48, respectively. The yoke member 44 is provided with a rearwardly extending bight portion having laterally extending ends 52 and 53 by means of which it may be gripped by the fingers of the operator to pivot the yoke about the pivot points 50 and 5I.
As illustrated in dotted line in Fig. 2, when the operating yoke member 44 is raised or pivoted counterclockwise about the pivot points 50 and 5I the links 4|] and 4I force the front wall section 33 forwardly and disengage the indexing studs from the notches 36 and 31, permitting the member 33 to swing downwardly away from the front of the head II about the pivot points 45 and 46, thus exposing the entire forward end of the staple driving guideway and permitting removal of any jammed staples which cannot be readily moved through the aperture 39.
The member 33 is restored to closing position on the head I I by moving the same upwardly and rearwardly to reengage the ends of the pin 38 in the slots 36 and 31 while the yoke 44 is pivoted clockwise about pivot points 50- and 5I until it is fully seated on the frame portion 49, the pivot points being so related that the member 33 is thereby retained in closed position on the head While specific details of construction have been referred to in describing the illustrated device, it will be understood that other details of construction may be resorted to within the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. In a fastener driving device comprising a head having a vertical fastener driveway and a staple driving blade operable in said guideway, a movable front wall section for said guideway provided with flanges which extend rearwardly in engagement with the side walls of the head, said flanges being provided with rearwardly opening notches, indexing studs which project laterally of the side walls of the head into the rearwardly opening notches in the flanges for positioning the flanges accurately when the same are moved into their rearmost positions, and means for positively locking the flanges in their rearmost position including apair of pivotally connected link elements pivoted to one of said flanges and to said side Walls.
2. In a fastener driving device comprising a head having a vertical fastener driveway and a staple driving blade operable in said guideway, a movable front wall section for said guideway provided with flanges which extend rearwardly in engagement with the side walls of the head, said anges 4being provided with rearwardly opening notches, indexing studs which project laterally of the side walls of the head into the rearwardly opening notches in the flanges for positioning the flanges accurately when the same are moved into their rearmost positions, and means including swingable link members pivotally connecting said flanges with the side walls of said device.
3. In a fastener driving device comprising a frame having a forward chamber provided with a vertical fastener guideway and a fastener driving blade in said guideway, a separable front wall section closing a portion of said guideway, means for guiding said section to and from closed position on said frame, and connecting means cooperating with said guide means for moving said section, said connecting means comprisng a strap member pivoted to said frame and a link pivoted to said strap member and to said wall section.
4. In a fastener driving device comprising a frame having a forward chamber provided with a vertical fastener guideway and a fastener driving blade in said guideway, a separable front wall section closing a portion of said guideway adjacent the bottom of said chamber, said front wall section having rearwardly extending side arm members embracing the forward sides of said frame, said side arm members being provided with rearwardly opening slots, laterally extending pins on said frame adapted to be received in said slots when said front wall section is in closing position, a pair of link members each having one end pivoted to one of said side arm members at a point below said slots, an operating means for said links pivotally connected to said links and to said frame whereby in one position of said strap member said wall section is held in closed position and in another position of said strap member said -wall section is moved to expose said guideway.
5. In a fastener driving device comprising a frame having a forward chamber provided with a vertical fastener guideway and a fastener driving blade in said guideway, a separable front wall section closing a portion of said guideway adjacent the bottom of said chamber, said front of said frame, said link members being pivoted at their other ends to the legs of said strap member rearwardly of said pivotal connection with said frame whereby in one position of said strap member said wall section is held in closed position and in another position of said strap member said wall section is moved to expose said guideway.
