Abstract

636,774. Blind riveting. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and COOPER, B. P. Nov. 15, 1947, No. 30406. [Class 43] In a hand or poweroperated tool for blind riveting, the mandrel having a shouldered pulling part with which the pulling portion of a member in said tool co-operates to pull the mandrel and thus set the rivet, said member has a slot into which the mandrel stem is introduced transversely of the direction of pull so that the pulling portion of said member lies between the shoulder of the mandrel and the. work, the abutment means which hold the rivet up to the work during setting comprising a number of jaws, the abutment faces of which together normally form a continuous surface for engaging the rivet all round the mandrel, but which are separable to allow transverse introduction of the mandrel stem therebetween. The tool includes a sleeve 13, which is pulled down vertically in its casing 11 by operating lazy tongs mechanism of the type shown in Specification 348,818, the pulling portion 45 of the sleeve lying at one end of an axial bore 43 in the latter, and being provided with a radial slot 47. Opposed jaws 49, pivoted at 53 to the casing 11, have integral depending arms 57, the ends of which enter opposed slots 59 in the casing 11 to be acted on by leaf springs 61. By extending the lazy tongs mechanism fully the sleeve 13 pushes apart the jaws 49 against the action of the springs 61 to allow introduction into the tool of an assembly comprising a headed rivet 35 threaded on the stem of a headed mandrel, the projecting stem part 37 of which terminates in a shouldered pulling part or head 39. The stem part 37 of the mandrel is passed horizontally through the slot 47 in the sleeve 13 until the lower head 39 of the mandrel lies in the bore 43 below the pulling portion 45 of the sleeve 13, and the upper end of the stem part 37 lies centrally between the jaws 49 ; by slightly pushing in the operating knob of the mechanism the jaws 49 engage one another under the action of the springs 61, the stem of the mandrel being accommodated in central'semi-circular recesses in the abutment faces 65 of the jaws, these faces now forming a continuous surface engaging the rivet all round the mandrel stem. In use, the rivet, supported by the faces 65, is held against the work by manual pressure on the casing. 11, and the lazy tongs mechanism is operated so that the pulling portion 45 of the sleeve 13 pulls down the shouldered part 39 of the mandrel to effect setting, the jaws 49 being urged more tightly together as setting proceeds since the pivot pins 53 are off-set from the line of action of the pull. Specifications 490,047, 504,928, 507,358, 568,013, (Group XXII), 587,938 and 613,882 also are referred to.
