Abstract

1,116,321. Blind riveting. GEORGE TUCKER EYELET CO. Ltd. 27 Sept., 1965 [28 Sept., 1964], No. 40954/65. Heading B3U. A blind riveting tool comprises a body 10 within which is a draw-bar 24 and a jaw assembly 35 which together grip and pull the mandrel M of a rivet R to set the rivet. The draw-bar is pulled by clockwise movement of a handle 13 about a fulcrum pin 28 connecting it to the body 10. The jaw assembly 35 comprises a wedge element 20 which is urged by a spring 48 into sliding contact with a support element 38 which is pivoted on a pin 42 attached to the draw-bar 24. Pins 32 and 46 limit the movement of the elements 20 and 38 within the draw-bar. A replaceable anvil member 14 serves to guide the mandrel, and to restrain upward movement of the rivet, and has a conical face 58 which forces apart the mandrel engaging portions of the draw-bar 24 and the wedge element 20. To set the rivet handles 12, 13 are brought together against the action of the spring 48, raising the draw-bar and the pivot 42. The element 20 then slides down the face 40 of the element 38 until it grips the mandrel against a portion 18 of the draw-bar. Further upward movement of the draw-bar causes the jaw assembly to pivot about the pin 42, tightening the grip on the mandrel which is also raised, thus setting the rivet R. The anvil member 14 may be interchanged with others of different sizes one of which, 60, is stored in the handle 13. After the rivet has been set, breaking the mandrel away from the rivet, the handle is released and the mandrel falls away, bosses 66 being provided to prevent a broken mandrel from jamming the tool. When not in use the handles 12, 13 may be kept in a closed position, Fig. 1 (not shown), by means of a button 70 which can be engaged with a hook 74.
