Abstract

798,727. Screwdrivers. O'TOOLE, R. G. Dec. 21, 1956 [Dec. 24, 1955], No. 37011/55. Class 61. [Also in Group XXIV] A screwdriver or other rotary hand tool comprises a clutch having driving and driven members, the driving member being connected to the handle 15 of the tool and the driven member being connected to a rotatable shaft 1 carrying the working part 2 of the tool, a spring 9 being provided for urging the members out of engagement. The tool is operated by displacing the handle towards the work against the action of the spring to engage the driving and driven members and then rotating the handle in a chosen direction. The clutch comprises a lower toothed jaw 4 formed on an annular projection 5 extending around the shaft 1 and an upper toothed jaw 7 annularly formed on the roof 8 of a chamber 6 of a housing located at one end of the handle 15. The chamber 6 is closed by an annular screw plug 12 through which the shaft 1 extends. The inside walls of the housing above the chamber 7 and the inside walls of the plug 21 form guides for the shaft 1. The ends of the spring 9 are received in recesses provided respectively in the roof of the chamber and on the annular projection 5.
