Abstract
704,156. Removing curl from webs. FOXWELL, D. Dec. 19, 1951 [Dec. 23, 1950], No. 31320/50. Class 100 (1). [Also in Group VIII] A machine for straightening out or flattening a selvedge of woollen and analogous fabrics, has a scroll device for effecting uncurling of the selvedge as it runs through the machine and ironing means to which it passes directly from the scroll device. The latter may comprise a pair of scroll rollers 1, 2 having left- and right-hand helices respectively, the shaft 3 of the upper roller 1 being journalled in one end of an arm 5, the other end of which is mounted on a shaft 6 which is journalled in the frame 7 of the machine and driven from a shaft 14 through pulleys 15, 16 and a belt 17. A gear wheel 8 is mounted on the shaft 6 so as to be slidable longitudinally therealong, but is rotated with the shaft 6 by a key engaging a keyway therein, and drives the roller 1 through a gear wheel 9 and the roller 2 through gearwheels 10 and 13. The bearings for the gear wheel 10 and the scroll roller 2 are mounted on a plate 11 which is attached to a carriage 20, on which are mounted the ironing means. The carriage 20 and the assembly carried thereby, is movable transversely of the machine on guides 18, 19 fixed in the frame 7 thereof by means of a spindle 22 on which is mounted a handwheel 23 ; a similar carriage on the other side of the machine is simultaneously caused to approach or recede from it, the spindle 22 having screw threads of opposite hand acting on nuts on the carriages. The fabric may be damped by means of a sprayer or steamer, or felt rollers running in water troughs, before it passes between the scroll rollers.
