651,978. Removing foreign matter from webs of textile fibres. PERKINS & SON, Inc., B. F. Feb. 11, 1948, No. 4027. Convention date. June 13, 1947. [Classes 120(i) and 120(ii)] Apparatus for removing foreign matter from textile fibre webs and comprising successive pairs of drawing rolls followed by successive pairs of extender rolls for comminuting foreign matter has the first two pairs of drawing rolls mounted in bearings which are vertically adjustable to or from the extender rolls. The drawing rolls preferably have longitudinally extending teeth and the extender rolls are circumferentially grooved. Each pair of extender rolls 16, 18 has one fixed roll and one roll mounted in slidable bearings 36, 50, subjected to pressure by springs 54. Each pair of drawing rolls 10, 12, 14 is similarly arranged for spring pressure, but the lower two pairs 10, 12 are mounted for vertical adjustment in slots 114. Adjustment is by vertical screws 122 having upper and lower threaded portions of different pitch, so that the lowest pair of rolls 10 receives greater movement than rolls 12. Screws 122 are rotated by a crank 130. The shaft 28 of the upper, fixed extender roll 18 may be the main driving shaft and the other pairs of rolls are associated with it by change gears 58, 148 and a chain drive to the two lower pairs.
