A machine for finishing textile articles fitted on forms 12 comprising an intermittently-movable, horizontal, endless conveyer-chain 6 on which the forms are mounted and at least one treatment device for the articles disposed along the path of the chain, is characterized in that all the elements for intermittently driving the chain 6 and for compensation of any elongation of the chain 6 due to wear are grouped together on the machine frame so as not to project laterally beyond the two straight runs of the chain 6. The forms 12 are mounted on brackets 7 each fitted with a roller 8 to run along guide rails 9, 10. A wheel 4 around which the chain 6 is entrained is driven intermittently through a Geneva mechanism (Fig. 4, not shown). The drive for the mechanism is supplied by a motor 23 through a pulley 22 and a belt 21. The pulley 22 has two steps and a fork 24 on a sliding rod 25 actuated by a lever 26 can move the belt 21 to engage either step so that the chain 6 can be' driven at either of two different speeds. A wheel 5, Fig. 3, around which the chain 6 is also entrained is mounted on a shaft 3 on a support 27 having a base - plate 28 which can be displaced by a clamping screw 29 to compensate for any elongation of the chain 6 due to wear. The articles on the forms 12 pass through a heated, drying tunnel 30 and a cooling device 31. Two pairs of plates 34, 37 for pressing or glazing are mounted alongside the chain 6 and comprise plates 32, 33, 35, 36 mounted on arms 38, 40, 42, 44 respectively pivoted on shafts 39, 41, 43, 45. Arms 40, 41 are connected by a tension spring 46 and are provided with rollers 47, 48 contacting cams 49, 50 mounted on the shaft 20 driven by the belt 21 and which are profiled so that the plates close against the forms 12 as soon as the latter stop and open before they are set in motion. Links 51, 52 connect arms 38, 44 and 40, 42 respectively. Adjustments may be made by devices 53, 54. For a steaming operation the plates 55, Fig. 7, have faces 56 pierced with orifices to impregnate or spray the articles. Steam is supplied from a conduit 61 through a chamber 60. Valves 58 regulate the admission of steam to plates 55 and are operated by a cam 74 on the shaft 20. The faces 56 may be lined with wadding. In a modification, spraying nozzles are disposed along the chain 6 to spray liquids which may contain chemicals on to the articles.
