Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4) Welding.-A process for butt welding of chain links is characterized in that simultaneously with the generation or application of the welding heat at the abutting ends of the chain link a narrow zone of the opposite cold side of the link is heated to softening point The heated narrow zone of the link renders the link pliable and eliminates the tendency of the abutting ends to spring apart. An electric heating current is passed transversely through the side of the link to effect rapid heating and the welding pressure may be released immediately after welding no cooling of the weld being necessary.
