Abstract

509,998. Making chains. TAYLOR CHAIN CO., S. G. Feb. 1, 1939, No. 3400. Convention date, March 26, 1938. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Welding: breaking-In making welded chains, each link, which comprises a single length of stock 10 with opposed ends 11, 12 in close relationship, is rigidly mounted during operation on supports movable relatively to each other along a line passing through the axes of the opposing end-faces and the integral link is then severed to form two link segments 20, 21, Fig. 2, which are-then electrically heated by pairs of electrodes 14, 15 and 16, 17 and pressed together to weld the pairs of ends together. Severing may be effected by a saw or abrasive disc or by heating by the electrodes 16, 17 and then applying tension. The integral link may be formed with a notch 13 or with a groove extending partly or wholly round the circumference thereof. The joint may be effected by flash butt-welding. The pairs of electrodes may be connected to the same or different electric circuits. If they are connected to the same circuit the ends 11, 12 are held out of contact while the integral link is being heated prior to severing.
