Abstract
549,206. Welding chain links. NORTH BRITISH ELECTRIC WELDING CO., Ltd., and GLOVER, T. S. April 8, 1941, No. 4693. [Class 83 (ii)] Studded chain links are made by welding together two complementary J-shaped segments, the longer limb of one of the segments having a transverse stud engaging the longer limb of the other segment. The segments 1, 2 which are provided with flashing allowances 5 are welded together at their ends. The ends in the vicinity of the free end of the stud 3 are previously deformed to a slight extent beyond the normal so that they are clear of the free end of the stud during welding. After welding the deformed side of the link is squeezed inwardly until the longer limb of the unstudded segment engages the free end of the stud. The free end of the stud which may be convexly curved in the plane of the link is concavely curved at 4 so as to engage saddle-fashion the longer limb of the segment 1 to prevent deformation out of the plane of the link. In a modification the planes of the welds are oblique to the length of the link instead of at right angles thereto.
