Abstract
546,556. Making chains. NORTH BRITISH ELECTRIC WELDING CO., Ltd., and GLOVER, T. S. Dec. 16, 1940, No. 17708. [Class 83 (ii)] Studded chain links of the kind including two complementary U-shaped segments welded together are made by forming a major link segment with an integral transverse stud 21 branching from the limb 22 with the other limb 23 bent away from the free end of the stud to allow another link to be applied, then bending the limb 23 into normal position and welding to the ends a minor link segment 27. The end face 26 of the stud may be of cylindrical convex form in which case the limb 23 has a portion of the same cross-sectional area as the rest of the bar but with a cylindrically concaved seat 25 on the face of the stud may present a cylindrical concavity for mating with a limb of uniform cross sectional shape. In another form the face of the stud may have a keyway 34 to receive a key 35 formed on the limb 36. In a modification of the first form lateral excrescences 41 may be formed on the free end of the stud which are ultimately riveted inwardly against the adjacent limb. Welding may be effected by the automatic electric resistance welding process.
