Abstract

538,075. Welding chain links. NORTH BRITISH ELECTRIC WELDING CO., Ltd., and GLOVER, T. S. May 25, 1940, Nos. 9242 and 13043. [Class 83 (iv)] In making studded chain links by automatic electric resistance welding, two complementary half links are welded together and at the same time the stud is seated on both half links and is keyed with portions of at least one of the half links adjoining the welded extremities thereof. The half links are formed with inwardly-facing upset portions presenting a plane surface 1b, 2b parallel to the length of the link. These portions are machined to form small keyways 5 having sloping bases with which engage non- circular projections 4 on the ends of the stud 3, the other portions of the ends of the stud engaging the seats on the half links. One half link projects beyond the minor axis so as to provide excess metal which is sparked off in welding so that the plane of the weld is on the minor axis. In a modification the ends of the stud are formed with unilateral projections 6, Fig. 8, projecting into mating keyways in one only of the half links. In either case the pressure applied during welding forces the inclined bases of the keyways into intimate contact with the projections so that the link is welded and the stud keyed in the same operation. The projections may be formed on the link and the keyways in the ends of the stud.
