648,948. Welding chains. FISHER & LUDLOW, Ltd. Nov. 30, 1948, No. 31014. [Class 83 (iv)] Electric welding; joints.-Joints in chain links comprsing a pair of bushes 11 connected by plates 10 secured to the ends thereof are made by forming either the ends of the bushes or those of the plates with one or more projections which taper outwardly and are welded electrically to the adjacent surfaces of the plates or bushes while such parts are pressed together. The links may be formed by punching the ends of the plates 10 to form a number of projections 15, Fig. 5, and pressure-welding them to the ends of the bushes. The ends of the plates 10 and the bush blanks 11 are then drilled to receive pins 12 which are secured at 14 against rotation in the plates 10 and are adapted to carry rollers 13. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, a single annular projection 17 is provided on each end of the bush blanks 11 and pressure-welded to the adjacent plate, in which a hole has already been formed for a pin 12 and to allow the escape of gas and scale during the welding operation. The bush shown in Fig. 8 is formed by bending it from a flat plate, the meeting edges being welded at 19.
