Driving-chains with separate pin joints.-To secure links, plate or washers upon bushes, studs, or pins, projections e are formed on the cylindrical surface of the pins &c. consisting of metal which has been displaced from the surface so as to leave corresponding grooves or depressions g, the projections serving to cut or broach grooves or keyways in the plates or washers when these are forced on to their studs or bushes, in the manner described in Specification 286.871. The metal of the plates &c. displaced by the projections enters the grooves g to afford a double keying effect. To give further security, a spinning-tool may be applied at m to the plate b, Fig. 7, to drift metal into a groove k around the pin, as described in Specification 278,808; or a head n, Fig. 8, may be formed on the pin so that after it is forced through the plate this beds itself by elastic recovery into a groove o behind the head, as described in Specification 267,692; or the ends of the pins may have a part p. Fig. 9, of force-fit diameter separated by a groove r from a part q of greater diameter which forces metal from the plate into the groove, as described in Specification 296,233. A similar construction is described (Fig. 10, not shown) in which the parts p, q are both of force-fit diameter.
