Abstract

1498339 Making chain links; welding by fusion FMC CORP 12 April 1976 [20 Oct 1975] 14790/76 Headings B3A and B3R [Also in Division F2] A bushing link for a chain is made by welding the end of each bushing 14, Fig. 5, into a respective aperture in a link plate 12 using a high energy beam, e.g. CO 2 laser beam, 26 directed parallel to the bushing axis and indexed along a circular path B. Each bushing link 10, Fig. 6, is connected to an adjacent bushing link by a pin link 32. The pins 34 of the pin link are crimped to the respective outer link plates 36 or are laser welded. Although the binding links are heat treated after welding, the pin links are heat treated before the welding or crimping. The laser beam may be used in an atmospheric environment, have a power of 1100 to 1175 watts, and travel at 100 to 125 inches/min. for a link plate of 0À06 inches thickness.
