Abstract
388,390. Welding rails &c. INTERNATIONAL GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Inc., 120, Broadway, New York, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Allgemeine Elektricitõts-Ges. ; 2, Friedrich Karl-Ufer, Berlin.) Aug. 14, 1931, No. 22969. Convention date, Aug. 15, 1930. [Class 83 (iv).] In butt welding rails &c. by electric flash welding in which smaller parts are welded into both sides of the joint to form a crosswise weld a pair of stationary grippers secure the rail &c. and the other parts are secured to grippers positively moved in opposite directions towards and from the joint. After welding, projections are removed from the joint. The rails 8, 9 are secured by stationary grippers 2, 3 connected to the centre point of the secondary of a transformer, and the parts 6, 7 are secured to grippers 4, 5 connected to the opposite ends of the secondary. The grippers 4, 5 are carried by a lever 11 pivoted at 12, the gripper 4 being mounted in a screwoperated slide 15 connected by a link 14 to the framing so that rotation of the screw alternately in opposite directions causes both parts 6, 7 to move simultaneously towards or from the joint so as to obtain a uniform burning away of the parts during the flashing period. In a modification, the grippers 4, 5 are mounted on slides movable in opposite directions by a right- and left-handed screw 21.
