Abstract
555,153. Chains; ; forging. PIERRE, H., ST. Feb. 3, 1942, No. 1430. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Chain is, built up by uniting two solid links by a link formed with a solid side 10 terminating in ends, shouldered at 18 to permit a forged joint by means of a socket 20 ground on the stud 14. To permit the link to be forged by straight hammer blows the part 20 is formed initially out of the plane of the link as in Fig. 2 being twisted. to the position, Fig. 4, prior to the engagement of the ends by bending in. The ends are cold whilst the socket is heated for contraction on to the ends by radial pressure. A plain link may be formed with a shouldered end 28 and a socket end 34 forged originally in bent up position, Fig. 6. In a further modification the ends are made to interlock with each other as well as with the sockets. Since the joints are not welded the links may be made from non-weldable high strength alloys permitting heat treatment. Specification 275,973, [Class 83 (ii)], is referred to.
