Abstract
689,391. Making chains. DUNN, J., and ROBERTS, D. Jan. 22, 1951 [Feb. 1, 1950], No. 2581/50. Class 83 (iv). Welding by pressure.-In a method of making chains, each link is formed from an element which is bent into a loop with the ends forming a shouldered lap joint, the two overlapping portions forming a portion of greater thickness than that of the remainder of the element, and the joint is heated and forged by dies 17, 18 at opposite sides so as to weld the overlapping surfaces together. After the first forging the link is turned through 90 degrees and the dies reclosed on the work. A second pair of dies having smaller cavities may then effect two similar forging operations, without reheating. The links may be supported at their ends by supports 20, which may also constitute pressure slides to force the transverse surfaces 13, 14 into welding contact. Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), indicate modified forms of shouldered lapped joints.
